The committed Weyregger developed great interest in politics at a young age and soon joined the Young People’s Party, where he also became the companion of former provincial governor Josef Pühringer.
He later became passionately involved in community politics. “Weyregg was very important to my father. He wanted the community to develop and show its full potential,” says his son Nikolas Bracher. And with this attitude he was known far beyond the community borders. “He never minced his words, he always knew exactly what he wanted. His tone could often be a bit rougher,” reveals his son with a smile.
His professional career originally began quite differently: namely as an apprentice locksmith at Lenzing AG, where he also passed his master’s examination. Shortly thereafter, Günther Bracher switched to a company for plastic and aluminum windows in Wels, where he worked in the field throughout Austria.
Community sport promoter
But the longing for home on Lake Attersee was too great, which is why Bracher switched to Uniqa insurance. There he held the position of area director for the districts of Gmunden, Vöcklabruck and Kirchdorf for many years.
However, his political interest increased more and more: First as deputy mayor and sports officer, then as mayor (1985 to 1997), the further development of the sports facilities was particularly important to him. “He has always observed the current trends in sport very closely and always wanted to have his finger on the pulse here,” says his son. Günther Bracher is himself a gifted sportsman and an important co-founder of the sports club in Weyregg, to which the tennis club also belongs.
A big family man
Günther Bracher also received the Gold Medal of Merit from the Republic of Austria for his great commitment to politics. If there was a festival in Weyregg am Attersee, this was one of Günther Bracher’s fixed points. “My father was always a very sociable person. He never missed a party,” says his son.
But above all, family was always the cornerstone of Günther Bracher’s life. His wife Marianne, whom he met and fell in love with more than 60 years ago, was always by his side and gave him full support in politics and in family life. Günther Bracher also always had an open ear for his three children Nikolas, Thomas and Sabine as well as for his five grandchildren. “We children have traveled a lot in the world. But my father said: ‘The door is always open, stay as you are??'” His son remembers.
Günther Bracher died unexpectedly last Sunday at the age of 83. The funeral will take place next Tuesday at the local cemetery in Weyregg am Attersee.
