Who is Yamandú Orsi, José Mujica’s successor who meets with Argentine businessmen?

Yamandú Orsipresidential candidate for the Broad Front (FA)), took a break in the final stretch of the campaign in Uruguay to cross the pond and discuss his economic plan in front of the country’s leading businessmen in case he wins the October elections.

Orsi will speak before the Inter-American Council for Trade and Production (CICyP) just over a month before the general elections, where he is the favourite in all the polls of voting intentions.

The former mayor of Cannelloni He is considered the former president’s successor Jose Mujicawho actively participated in his campaign during the primaries before lowering his profile due to medical advice due to treatment for esophageal cancer.

With his moderate profile he won the June party elections against Carolina Cosseformer mayor of Montevideo and currently her running mate, and led to Broad Front to its best internal vote with 410,000 votes, an increase of more than 60% compared to 2019.

During that first part of the electoral campaign he was the target of what he called “a dirty campaign”, being accused of sexually assaulting a trans woman, an accusation that was later confirmed to be false and devised by the activist of National Party (PN), Romina Celeste.

Since the internal election was imposed, Orsi made the decision, criticized by his rivals, not to participate in forums where he would have to share exposure with the rest of the presidential candidates, all of them from the parties of the governing coalition: Alvaro Delgado (PN); Andres Ojeda (Colorado Party), Guido Manini Rios (Open Town Hall) and Pablo Mieres (Independent Party). The Frente Amplio member said that he is at a disadvantage in terms of time and numbers.

The measure did not affect his approval rating and he continues to lead the polls for voting intention, a scenario that has remained intact since the beginning of his race for the Presidency.

The latest poll, published by Factum on Monday, shows that if the elections were held next Sunday, 44% of voters would support Orsi, while 27% would support Delgado.

His eventual government had a first controversy due to the clash between the president of the FA, Fernando Pereiraand the economist Gabriel Oddone(who is his favourite candidate to occupy the Ministry of Economy) regarding the future of the minimum wage and its indexation to inflation.

Orsi put an end to it by emphasizing his role in a supposed Executive. “Those who assume responsibility, and first of all, the President of the Republic, must be clear about what the goal is and what the people asked us to do,” he stressed and added: “Whoever comes must adapt and will have to generate the conditions and management for that to happen.”

His government plan was presented last Monday at an event in Colonia de Sacramento. In it he outlined three priorities for the administration: work, security and health.

“We say first of all that we are going to have a Uruguay “with economic stability, but focused on growth with inclusion and well-being,” Orsi stressed, adding: “That is what I call a prosperous, open Uruguay.”
