More than 4,000 people participated in the Fuegian city of Rio Grande from 2° Provincial Course for Trainers in Suicide Prevention, which brought together specialists from the Argentine Association of Psychiatrists, teachers, security forces and other civil society actors.
Mental health has become a critical issue in Argentina, especially after the effects of the pandemic. In this context, The 2nd Provincial Course for Trainers in Suicide Prevention, held in Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, stood out for its comprehensive approach and its massive attendance of more than 4,000 participants.
The course brought together specialists from the Argentine Psychiatric Association (APSA), teachers, security forces and other key actors. APSA President Cora Luguercho emphasized the need for joint work between the State, civil society and mental health professionals to implement effective and sustainable policies.
At a time when the debate on the role of the State in public health is on the agenda, this collaboration is essential to advance in the prevention of a problem that affects everyone.
Mental health: a comprehensive and preventive approach
This course is part of a series of public policies that, under the management of Mayor Martín Pérez, have been implemented since 2019 with the creation of the Mental Health Directorate. This initiative seeks not only to offer assistance to people in crisis, but also to prioritize prevention, especially among young people and older adults, sectors that are seriously affected.

Pérez’s administration has highlighted that mental health is not a marginal issue, but a priority that must be at the centre of the political agenda.
From the municipal health portfolio They highlighted the work of an interdisciplinary team of more than 100 professionals in the area of mental health. “We are committed to facing this challenge with preventive actions and solid municipal support,” they said, stressing the importance of having such a large number of specialists in a city of this size.
A model for national debate
The experience of Rio Grande is not limited to the local level. In a national scenario where the role of the State in essential issues is being discussed, this course highlights the need for robust public intervention in the protection of mental health.
The active participation of teachers, security forces and other community actors indicates that suicide prevention requires a collaborative approach, where the State assumes its responsibility in building a healthier society.
Community engagement was a central theme of the event. Civil associations, NGOs, security forces and health professionals have joined forces to form a prevention network that is beginning to yield positive results.
“These training sessions are essential not only for those who work in the health sector, but for all those who make up the social fabric,” the organizers stressed.
