Recommendations ignored: Corona government advisors in Poland resign

13 of the 17 members of the Corona Advisory Committee resigned on Friday due to the “lack of influence” their recommendations had on the government. The announcement was published by the Polish news agency PAP.

Tolerance of corona deniers and opponents of vaccination

The medical advisors accused Warsaw of “increasingly tolerating the behavior of sections of society that deny the threat posed by Covid-19 and the importance of vaccination to combat the pandemic”. Government members and other high-ranking employees have also denied the risks of corona infection.

The government had taken “only very limited measures” to counteract the increase in cases in the fall, criticized the advisors. The cabinet failed to “confront the threat posed by the omicron variant, despite the alarmingly high number of predicted deaths”.

The move came days after the country of 38 million people surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths. According to the Polish Ministry of Health, around 21.3 million citizens have received two vaccinations against the coronavirus. More than eight million have been boosted.

Vaccination skeptics in right-wing governing party

Several members of the right-wing nationalist ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) have openly spoken out against corona vaccinations. The government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki depends on your support in parliament.
