For the 2024 winter tire test, the ÖAMTC and its partner organizations examined 28 models in two dimensions. The results cover almost the entire range, as Steffan Kerbl, tire expert at the mobility club, explains: “We did not give the top grade ‘very good’ – and only six of the 28 products achieved a ‘good’ rating. At the bottom of the table, however, there are seven ‘sufficient’ and unfortunately four ‘insufficient’. The rest, i.e. eleven models, are ‘satisfactory’.”
The tests were carried out on two main criteria: on the one hand, driving safety on dry, wet and wintry roads was assessed (70 percent of the overall rating), and on the other hand, all test candidates were checked with regard to their environmental performance (30 percent).
Three “good” in the lower middle class dimension
The results in the Dimensions 205/55 R16 91H In quick succession: three times “good”, four times each “satisfactory” and “sufficient” and one “unsatisfactory”.
ÖAMTC expert Kerbl summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the best tires of this dimension: “Basically, the models from Continental, Goodyear and Michelin balanced: There are no serious weaknesses on the various road conditions, and all score highly with good mileage. The differences are in the details: During the Continental takes the top spot in terms of safety and is particularly convincing on wet and wintry roads, the Michelin shows its strengths in terms of environmental performance and scores highly in terms of mileage, abrasion and efficiency. The tire from Goodyear lies between these two in both main criteria and is therefore the all-rounder among the top 3.”
