Borrell and Blinken discussed by phone the Russian Federation and agreed to be a “united front”

Head of European Union (EU) diplomacy Josep Borrell and United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed by telephone the dialogue with Russia, the situation around Ukraine and confirmed their intention to act as a “united front”. This was reported in the European External Action Service on Saturday, January 15.

“Close coordination between the EU and the US on the latest developments related to Russia and Ukraine continues at the highest level,” the agency’s website says.

It is argued that Europe and the States intend to continue intensive consultations on these and other issues, “representing a strong, clear and united transatlantic front.” At the same time, they expressed their readiness for dialogue with Russia, but “not to the detriment of freedom, sovereignty, independence of members of the transatlantic community and their partners.”

On January 15, Anthony Blinken and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a telephone conversation expressed the readiness of the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance to conduct new negotiations with Russia. During the conversation, they also discussed the next steps after the Russia-NATO Council meeting.

A series of consultations between Russia and the West on security guarantees took place this week. They were held in three stages: on January 10, a meeting of the delegations of the Russian Federation and the United States took place in Geneva, on January 12, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held in Brussels, and on January 13, consultations were completed at the Vienna site of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
