A tour of the 1747 meter high Kasberg in the common area of Grünau im Almtal (district of Gmunden) ended for a winter athlete in the hospital on Saturday: On the descent, the 34-year-old fell in difficult conditions and injured her knee so badly that she couldn’t go any further. Mountain rescuers from the Grünau site provided first aid and alerted the rescue helicopter, which dropped the emergency doctor directly at the accident site at 1,600 meters above sea level.
The young woman was rescued with a rope and, after a stopover in the Kasberg ski area, flown to the hospital in Kirchdorf. Her backpack and her skis were brought down into the valley by the mountain rescuers, the Grünau mountain rescue team announced on Sunday.

It wasn’t the only mission for the Almtal mountain rescuers this weekend. Also on Saturday, a woman slipped on an unmarked hike near the Almsee and fractured her forearm. She was brought down to the valley in the extremely slippery forest terrain by mountain stretcher.
