But you also have to know that certain requirements are needed to be able to reside in the country for an extended period of time. Not being a European citizen, it is necessary to obtain one of the documents that authorize people to reside and work in the country for a long time, known as Visa.
These are the different visas and options to live in Portugal
The particularity of Portugal is that it offers different Visa options to enter as an immigrant. The length of time the person wants to reside and the type of job they want to access will depend on this. Among the most common options are the Working Holiday Visa, the Digital Nomad Visa and the Job Search Visa.
But there are also other less known options that we will detail below, such as Residency by Expression of Interest and the ETIAS: Permission to travel to Europe.
Portugal Working Holiday Visa
It is one of the options most chosen by Argentines. It allows you to live and work legally for 12 months. And it also qualifies for one or more training or improvement courses for a duration of 6 months. And they allow you to leave and re-enter the country as many times as you want in that time.
There are only 100 places per year for this visa, and a tertiary level of education or having had at least 2 years of university education is required.
Portugal Digital Nomad Visa
This type of Visa allows all those who want to work independently or through a business to work. The main requirement is to have had during the last three months an average monthly income equivalent to four times the national minimum wage in Portugal, which is currently 760 Euros per month. That is, 3040 Euros.
In the case of freelancers, they must have a written contract or proposal from the service provider. This visa allows you to stay in Portugal for up to 1 year, but there is the possibility of extending the validity for up to 5 years.
Job Search Visa
This type of Visa allows a 4-month stay in Portugal while seeking employment in a dependency relationship. Once the term has ended, an extension of 2 more months is allowed. Some of the requirements to apply are having a return ticket, having health insurance, having at least 3 minimum wages in the bank account and proven accommodation.
If you do not find employment within these periods, you must return to your country of origin. If you get the job, you must present the documentation to the Foreigners and Borders Service and obtain a 2-year residence.
Residency by Expression of Interest
This is one of the simplest options to obtain residency. It is enough to enter the country as tourists and get a job or promise of work before 90 days of stay. If you meet all the requirements, in a period of between 10 days and one month you will receive the Residency by Expression of Interest that allows you to live in the country for 2 years. There is also the option to renew it for 3 more years. And once those 5 years are over, the process of obtaining permanent residence can begin.
In any case, by 2024 there are no more places for this type of residence.
ETIAS: Permit to travel to Europe
The ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorization System. It will come into force in 2025 and is mandatory for all citizens who are not part of the Schengen area. This is a permit for those who visit the country for tourism, transit or commercial purposes.
