The big howl: siren test alarm

In Upper Austria, all civil defense sirens passed the test. (civil defense)
The siren warnings for the civil defense test alarm on Saturday are triggered via the federal and, as here, the state warning center in Linz.

Around 1,400 systems in Upper Austria alone are expected to join in the common howl, and more than 8,300 nationwide – at least if everything goes according to plan. On the one hand, this is intended to check the functionality of the sirens and, on the other hand, to familiarize the population with the signals and their meaning.

Signals every quarter of an hour

It starts at 12 p.m. Then the state warning center triggers a continuous tone lasting 15 seconds – the siren test. The three civil defense signals follow every 15 minutes. 12.15 p.m.: “Warning” signal – a continuous tone for three minutes. At 12.30 p.m. the “alarm” signal follows – sirens that wax and wane for a minute. Finally, at 12:45 p.m., the “all clear” signal is given – a constant, continuous tone for one minute.

In addition to the sirens, cell phones will also give a signal in the country for the first time this year. For the first time, the new warning system “AT-Alert” is being tested in the nationwide civil defense test alarm. A message is received directly on the cell phones. The goal is to reach as many people as possible directly via their cell phones. “AT-Alert” is not intended to be introduced as a replacement, but as an additional warning system to the sirens.
