Congressman announced the beginning of a new cold war between Russia and the United States

The Russian Federation and the United States again found themselves in a state of cold war. This was announced on January 16 by Michael McCall, the chief Republican in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of Congress.

“I think so. I think so because, I believe, Russian President Vladimir Putin has again smelled weakness here, ”he said, answering a question from CNN about the possible start of the Cold War.

The congressman believes that Washington is making insufficient efforts in connection with the current situation, namely the growing tension in relations between Moscow and Kiev.

“I do not see significant deterrence (of Russia. – Ed.). I see some tough rhetoric, but not a lot of action… You have to put things like sanctions on the table, you have to talk about arms sales to Ukraine,” McCall added.

On January 12, a group of Democratic senators in the United States presented a bill providing for the introduction of new sanctions against Russia in case the situation around Ukraine worsens. The initiative was put forward by the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US Senate Robert Menendez (Democrat from New Jersey). He, at the head of 25 of his fellow Democrats, presented the “Act for the Protection of the Sovereignty of Ukraine.”

On the same day, Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov noted that the imposition of US sanctions against the Russian authorities could seriously aggravate relations between Washington and Moscow, up to their break.

On January 14, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that US congressmen should avoid the threat of new sanctions. Sanctions do not scare Russia, they “only destroy relations.” The speaker of the State Duma advised members of Congress “not to invent problems for yourself.”

On January 16, the press secretary of the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, said that the sanctions proposed in the United States against the leadership of the Russian Federation could lead to the termination of relations between the two countries.
