The most recent eruption was registered at 11:10 p.m. CET on Sunday evening, the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said it had detected large waves in the area. “This could be due to another explosion from the Tonga volcano,” the Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. “There are no known earthquakes of any significant magnitude that could produce this wave.”
After the severe eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on Saturday, high waves had caused serious damage in the Pacific state of Tonga. The tremors caused tidal waves in Japan, the USA, New Zealand and several South American Pacific Rim countries.
Because of broken communication lines, the extent of the devastation in Tonga is not yet apparent. According to the network operator, the internet outage could last for days. “We’re getting patchy information, but it looks like the cable has been cut,” Southern Cross Cable Network director Dean Veverka told AFP. “It could take up to two weeks to fix it .” The nearest cable-laying ship is in Papua New Guinea, thousands of kilometers away.
