Birgit Kornmüller, together with Gerald Zehetner, runs the Bogenfeld Architektur office, which was founded in Linz in 2010 and currently has ten employees. One focus of the team is on building existing buildings. Kornmüller studied architecture in Graz and is, among other things, a board member of the Chamber of Civil Engineers and Architects for Upper Austria and Salzburg.
OÖNachrichten: How does architectural work on a specific task begin at Bogenfeld?
Birgit Kornmüller: At the beginning there is the question: What is already there? What does the task look like and are there aspects, for example in a competition, that the client may not have taken into account. Thinking beyond the task often leads to surprising results and better designs.
This takes courage.
Yes. Ideally, the corset for planning should not be too tight from the outset in order to be able to work creatively. In addition, it is not necessarily more expensive to think differently and develop alternatives.
What role does context play specifically? So that, what you find at the beginning.
First of all: There is no construction task that is without context. There is always something there: city, place, landscape, people, a story. That’s why – let’s call it that – autistic architecture is completely alien to us. In other words, building that is self-sufficient and takes no consideration. That’s why we especially love simple, timeless buildings that stand the test of time and fit in. Implementing this is complex enough.
