Minus 3.6%: New passenger car registrations fell again in 2021

According to Statistics Austria, 239,803 cars were newly registered last year, down 3.6 percent on the previous year (2020: 248,740 registrations). Compared to the pre-crisis year 2019, there are 27.2 percent fewer registrations. On the other hand, there was an increase in hybrid and electric cars: pure electric cars accounted for 13.9 percent of registrations. There was a significant increase in alternatively powered passenger cars. Their share of total registrations increased within a year from around 20 to 37.6 percent. The absolute number of newly registered alternatively powered vehicles in 2021 was only around 1,400 behind the petrol engines (share: 38.1 percent). Hybrid cars are also counted among cars with alternative drives.

36 percent fewer diesel cars registered

At 58,263 diesel cars were registered, almost 36 percent fewer. In the case of petrol engines, there was a drop of around 15 percent. On average, the vehicles registered in 2021 would cause CO2 emissions of 116 grams per kilometer – measured according to the WLTP test procedure, according to Statistics Austria. Without electric and hydrogen vehicles, the value was 135 g/km.

VW still market leader

In terms of brands, VW remains the market leader with a 15 percent share, followed by Skoda (9.1 percent). The VW subsidiary Audi was able to sell significantly more. Renault, on the other hand, lost a lot.

There was a clear increase in commercial vehicles. With 62,561 new registrations, 56.2 percent more trucks were registered in 2021. The vast majority of these were light commercial vehicles (58,806 units), “which can be linked to the introduction of the NoVA obligation for light commercial vehicles on June 1, 2021 with a transitional period until the beginning of November,” according to Statistics Austria in its broadcast .

After the strong increase in two-wheelers in the previous year, a slight decline of 2.9 percent was observed in 2021. There was hardly any change for motorcycles – the number of new registrations for mopeds, on the other hand, fell by 10.8 percent.
