Zelensky’s office called extras of participants in the rally in support of Poroshenko

Supporters of the ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, who organized mass actions against the backdrop of the return of the politician to his homeland, are extras. This was stated on Monday, January 17, adviser to the head of the office of the Ukrainian leader Mikhail Podolyak.

Earlier that day, Poroshenko flew to Kiev from Warsaw, at the airport he was met by employees of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine, and his supporters were waiting for the politician at the air harbor building. Representatives of the State Bureau of Investigation prevented Poroshenko from going through passport control and took away his identity document, which they later returned.

Podolyak stressed that the return of a person who went abroad on an urgent basis provides for some simple procedures: obtaining a procedural document, appearing in court. According to him, in such things “there is nothing complicated or unusual.”

“But if a person turns this into some kind of performance with extras, if every step at the airport is accompanied by hysterical screams, then this clearly indicates extreme exaltation and disrespect for the basic procedural rules,” Podolyak said in a comment to Interfax-Ukraine.

At the same time, he added that Poroshenko allows himself “too much” for a politician with such actions. In particular, Podolyak pointed out, the behavior of the ex-president explains why the transformation of Ukraine into a modern and legal state has dragged on so long since the 1990s.

Poroshenko himself, after returning from Warsaw, called on all opponents of the power of the current president of the country, Vladimir Zelensky, to unite. The politician promised that not only Zelensky, but also businessman Igor Kolomoisky would be punished for the destruction of the country.

From the airport, Poroshenko arrived at a meeting of the Kiev Pechersk Court, where he was elected a measure of restraint in the case of treason. During the break, he went out to supporters and said that the court decided to appoint him a free lawyer, depriving his lawyers Ilya Novikov and Igor Golovan of their duties. The judge announced a break during which Poroshenko’s side will try to get acquainted with nine volumes of the case in an hour and a half.

On January 12, the Pechersky District Court of Kiev allowed Poroshenko to be detained for forced delivery to a court session to select a measure of restraint for him. Prior to that, on January 6, it was reported that a court in Kiev had seized all of Poroshenko’s property.

The former Ukrainian leader is being investigated for possible involvement in high treason, as announced on December 20 by the SBI of Ukraine. However, in the process of serving the summons, Poroshenko ignored the security forces and left. He then left the country and headed for Poland. The politician himself promised to return to Ukraine at the beginning of 2022 and give “answers to all questions – both regarding high treason and regarding the financing of terrorism.”
