Doctors in Germany may say that they offer termination of pregnancy, but they are not authorized to provide further information about such procedures.
Critics have said the law, known as the 219th, makes it too difficult for women to access information about what procedures are available and who provides them.
Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said getting rid of the law, introduced in 1933, would make it easier for women seeking more information online to consult qualified sources.
“Physicians should also be able to inform the public about abortion without risking criminal prosecution,” he added.
Since a legal reform in 2019, clinics and medical offices have the right to report that they perform abortions, something that until then was also prohibited, but they cannot explain on their website what procedures they use or what the risks associated with each of them are.
This situation is “unsustainable,” Buschmann said Monday during a press conference to present the draft, in which he argued that “It cannot be that anyone can publish information about abortion except those who are most qualified to do so.”
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Angela Merkel, as well as the Evangelical and Catholic Churches, are opposed to the lifting of the ban, because according to what they affirm there is no lack of information and the measure contributes to protecting the right to life of the fetus, reported the EFE agency.
Technically, abortion is completely illegal in Germany. However, it is allowed under certain circumstances and the procedure must be performed within 12 weeks of conception.
Several doctors have been sentenced in recent years to pay fines based on Nazi law, and feminist organizations denounce that the anti-abortion movement uses it to intimidate clinics that offer the procedure.
