He October 17 is celebrated on International Day for the Eradication of Povertywith the aim of ending this condition in all its forms and throughout the world. It is estimated that in developing countries, one in ten people live on less than $2 a day, which is the amount established internationally as the poverty line.

Furthermore, many lack access to food, drinking water, and conditions to properly sanitize. The data was collected by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Furthermore, people who are in poverty face hostile attitudes (stigmatization, mistreatment and discrimination) on a daily basis.

Why the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is commemorated every October 17

Although the proclamation of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was in 1992, the social struggle exploded a few years earlier, when on October 17, 1987, in Paris, around 100,000 people gathered in the Trocadero square to demonstrate against favor of human rights and freedom in honor of the victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear.

The call was organized by Joseph Wresinski and was initially called World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty. That day, principles of human rights were inscribed in the square and engraved on commemorative slabs of which replicas were made around the world, one of which is in the UN headquarters in New York.

Each year, the day has a headline motto, which in 2024 is “End social and institutional abuse.” It is intended to make visible that the mistreatment suffered by poor people on the streets is not only discrimination and prejudice coming from other people but also institutional, when rights such as medical care, education, housing, or access to a legal identity.
