On Monday afternoon, the fire brigade and water rescue team went out on a completely unusual mission: a Tesla fell into Lake Traunsee in the municipality of Gmunden and sank. The driver, a 45-year-old Czech from the Ried district, was able to escape uninjured from his sinking electric car. He survived the accident, shocked and wet, but uninjured.
Problem with autopilot?
What exactly happened? At around 1:20 p.m., the Tesla was heading toward the U-turn on Traunstein Street when it apparently first braked hard and then accelerated sharply again. The driver told the police that the autopilot had detected an obstacle on the road where there was none. In any case, the 45-year-old was so frightened by the unpredictable driving maneuver that he turned the steering wheel to the right, drove over a narrow green strip and fell into Lake Traunsee.
Hours of effort
Emergency services from three fire departments and water rescue divers worked for hours to rescue the car from a depth of five meters. Pictures showed the white Tesla, Model X, being lifted out of the lake with the wing doors open.
