The Bahía Blanca port management consortium reported that the reservation is for six months with the option to renew for the same period. Pampa Energía would begin feasibility studies shortly.

The company Pampa Energía is advancing its project to build a fertilizer plant in Bahía Blanca that would require an investment of around US$1.2 billion. More specifically, the board of directors of the Port of Bahía Blanca reported that granted a land reserve to the project, for a period of six months, with the possibility of renewal for the same period.

These lands, until a few weeks ago, were blocked by the previous reserve that YPF had within the framework of the LNG project which he planned to finalize with the Malaysian firm Petronas. As these numerous hectares are released, other initiatives can begin to emerge.

It is a 70-hectare property where the firm led by businessman Marcelo Mindlin will begin to carry out engineering studies to define whether that location is ideal for investment. Another key fact is that if this project comes to fruition, Argentina would become self-sufficient in nitrogen, a fundamental fertilizer for agricultural production that is also in high demand abroad.

The availability of natural gas – coming from both conventional and shale gas fields – gives Argentina the possibility of transforming this energy input into nitrogen fertilizer, a product that is largely imported today.

Currently, the undisputed leader in this segment is the firm Profertil, which was born from the association of YPF with the Canadian company Nutrien. and has a production capacity of around 1.4 million tons that does not supply all local demand, which is why for years This joint venture has been working on the possibility of building a second plant, something that has not made progress at the moment and the departure of Nutrien from the country also complicated the scenario.
