The 26-year-old Moldovan was caught during a vehicle inspection in Hungary, police said. On Monday he drove a van with twelve refugees across the border crossing at Bildein (Güssing district) and fled from a checkpoint, shooting twice in the direction of the soldiers.
An alarm search for the tugboat was unsuccessful on Monday. A second smuggler, a 22-year-old from Moldova, was caught on the spot. Nobody got hurt.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) thanked the Hungarian police for their cooperation on Wednesday and congratulated “on the rapid success of the search. The case in question has once again shown how efficiently and quickly cooperation on the Burgenland-Hungarian border works,” he emphasized. The police cooperation center in Nickelsdorf is the linchpin of the cross-border investigative work.
