The organizers put the number of participants at over 10,000. The funeral ceremonies, at which excerpts from the Koran and tributes to Gülen were read, were held in a sports stadium in the US state of New Jersey, which has a large Turkish-American population.

Gülen’s coffin was wrapped in a green cloth with verses from the Koran written on it. The preacher will be buried in the Pocono Mountains, a mountainous region in the US state of Pennsylvania where Gülen lived for more than two decades. Gülen died in hospital in the USA on Sunday at the age of 83. For years, the Islamic preacher had great influence in Turkey through a network of educational institutions and media. His Hizmet movement also founded numerous schools internationally.
