“It’s a gift that we were able to be there. We are happy,” say Christine and Johann Mairhofer after the wedding of their grandson Thomas and his bride Michaela in Wilhering (Linz-Land). Being able to celebrate on this day was a long-awaited wish for the couple, especially for Johann Maierhofer, who is in a wheelchair after a stroke and lives in a nursing home in St. Georgen an der Gusen (Perg district).

This was made possible by the Red Cross Wish Mobile, which fulfills the wishes of seriously ill people. “Grandma and Grandpa always said that they wanted to be there at my wedding,” says grandson Thomas Mairhofer. “Seeing how happy they were also touched me deeply. Above all, the fact that Grandpa was able to be by my side despite his health limitations means an incredible amount to me.”
“We see the gratitude”
Christine and Johann Mairhofer were accompanied by Red Cross employees Christina Plachy and Margarete Brunbaur. “It’s always nice to see the gratitude in people’s eyes,” they say. “We regularly organize such trips,” explains Christian Hartl from the Red Cross of Upper Austria. “We pick people up in a specially equipped ambulance and special teams accompany them.”
