The senators called on the government of the Czech Republic, appointed in December, to obtain financial compensation from Moscow for the damage caused by the bombings of military depots in the village of Vrbetice. Pavel Fischer, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Senate of the country, told journalists on Wednesday.
“We recommend that the government start revising relations with Russia, as it promised in its policy statement. We also call on the Cabinet not to forget [принять меры, направленные] to receive an apology and compensation from the Russian Federation,” Fisher said.
At the same time, the Czech Cabinet of Ministers, according to him, must ensure compliance with agreements and build mutually beneficial relations with Russia.
Russian-Czech relations deteriorated sharply after April 17, 2021. Then the Czech authorities accused Moscow of alleged involvement in the explosions at the ammunition depots in the village of Vrbetice in 2014. 18 Russian diplomats were expelled from the country, who were recognized as members of the Russian special services.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed a strong protest to the Czech Republic, calling the accusations “unfounded and far-fetched.” In addition, 20 employees of the Czech embassy in Moscow were declared persona non grata.
Further, the countries brought the number of diplomatic missions to parity.
On May 14, 2021, the government of the Russian Federation approved the list of countries unfriendly to Russia, which included the Czech Republic and the United States. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov on the same day noted that a small number of countries in this list indicates Moscow’s readiness for dialogue.
