A migrant girl died trying to enter the US

The National Institute of Migration (INM) of Mexico said that on Tuesday morning its staff “recovered the body of a minor, probably of Venezuelan nationality” in a sector of the river near the municipality of Coins, in the northern state of Coahuila.

The agency added that prior to the discovery, the United States border patrol had given notice of a missing girl in the river, who was wearing a red jacket, blue denim pants and white socks.

“Immediately, personnel from Grupo Beta Ciudad Acuña went by airboat to the indicated site, where the minor was located without vital signs, before which she was transferred to the shore, in Mexican territory,” he said.

According to local journalistic versions, a group of migrants, including several Central Americans, tried to cross the river, and when they almost succeeded, the girl slipped from the hand of the person who was carrying her, being dragged by the current.

Ciudad Acuña was the scene in 2021 of the migration crisis between Mexico and the United States when some 15,000 Haitian migrants camped on the border to desperately ask the US authorities for asylum.

Hundreds of migrants from various Latin American countries cross Mexican territory daily to reach the United States. The number increased with the arrival of Democrat Joe Biden to the White House.

However, along the way, many die in the Rio Grande that separates Mexico and the United States, in the desert, or victims of organized crime groups or Mexican authorities.

At the beginning of last December, 56 migrants died after the crash of the trailer that was transporting them clandestinely against a pedestrian bridge on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.

So far in 2022, four migrants have died trying to cross into the United States at this common border between Coahuila and Texas.
