The spill affected the National Reserve of the System of Islands, Islets and Points of Guaneras, Islotes de Pescadores and the Ancón Reserved Zone.
The Peruvian authorities have found various dead marine species and other living species that were rescued in the affected area covered in oil.
The spill occurred on Saturday in the sea of the Ventanilla del Callao district during a La Pampilla refinery operation, of the Spanish Repsol, in the process of unloading the Italian tanker “Mare Dorium”, presumably due to the violence of the waves.
The La Pampilla Refinery reported on Sunday that there had been a “limited spill” on the coast of Lima, and that at the time of the leak its security protocols were activated and “the incident” was contained the same day.
However, from the Ministry of the Environment it was pointed out that the spill was approximately 6,000 barrels of oil.
The refinery company reiterated this Wednesday in a statement that it is “executing the work of remediation of the coastal coastline and cleaning of beaches after the situation generated by the high tides recorded due to the volcanic eruption in Tonga.”
In addition, they added that “containment barriers have been deployed that cover all the affected areas and brigades with specialized teams by sea and land,” it was reported.
Likewise, the Peruvian prosecutor’s office opened an investigation on Monday for the alleged crime of environmental pollution against the legal representatives and officials of the refinery.
“Even this oil continues to affect marine fauna. There are birds that we have been able to rescue, the ravages of this oil continue to appear. It is unfortunate,” Luis Vargas, animal protector of Ventanilla, told the press.
