After killing four people and then barricading himself in his farmhouse near Großpriel (Melk district), Alois Huber (55) picked up the phone and called a friend: “I have a grazing shot in my stomach, but it’s not that bad. They won’t take me alive.”

On September 17, 2013, Huber shot three police officers and a paramedic. The executive had previously investigated poaching in the region for years. Numerous illegal kills in Lower Austria and Styria were attributed to the “Poacher from Annaberg”. Eventually the police began conducting large-scale surveillance operations including roadblocks. Huber came under such control on a state road near the community of Annaberg. He broke through the roadblock, officers from the Cobra task force shot after the vehicle and gave chase.

After a breakneck ride, Huber left the road and opened fire on the police. An officer was so seriously injured that he died a few hours later in the St. Pölten State Hospital. The poacher shot at an ambulance near a sawmill and injured another police officer. When a 70-year-old paramedic tried to help the injured officer, he was also shot by Huber.
