Now it’s getting serious: At the end of January, the preparatory work for the renovation of the Voest Bridge begins with the closure of the emergency lane. “For the time being, drivers will not feel much of this,” says Asfinag assembly manager Martin Pöcheim. The rehabilitation work will begin at the beginning of March, then the lane will be closed to the north and traffic will be diverted to the bypass bridges.
As a reminder: At the end of August 2020, the second east bypass bridge was opened to traffic. Although the bypass bridges were originally only intended to intercept traffic during the renovation, it is now clear that the bypasses will remain after the renovation.
From March, however, they will perform their original task when the lane to the north will be closed and will remain so until the end of the year. “The lane to the south and the bypasses are passable,” emphasizes Pöcheim. There are three reduced lanes on each of the bypass bridges, currently there are two each. In the area between the Dornach junction and the Urfahr junction, the four lanes of the two lanes are continuously narrowed to one lane.
The renovation of the northbound lane should be completed by the end of 2022, followed by the southbound lane in 2023. From 2024, the bridge should be fully accessible again – including bypasses. The total costs are estimated at around 40 million euros.
