He will not trickle quietly. The snow, which will spread across Upper Austria from noon today, has a powerful companion: the wind. Gusts that sweep through the valleys at 70 kilometers per hour and storms that increase the risk of avalanches on Upper Austria’s mountains are expected. The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) issued a wind warning until 6 a.m. tomorrow.
“A storm low scratches Upper Austria, we get a classic northern jam situation,” says ZAMG meteorologist Christian Resch. Means: snow. And in large quantities. While the limit for this morning is still around 600 meters above sea level, it falls to low levels around noon. The temperatures reach a maximum of four degrees. Tomorrow, Friday, the wind will calm down again during the day, with a rush of cold air the winter will also be clearly felt: One degree Celsius is the highest of feelings. It’s still snowing, even in the central area. On Saturday the flakes will slowly turn into drops there, in the mountains it will remain deep winter with strong winds. Up to 75 centimeters of fresh snow can fall there by Sunday.
Up to 40 centimeters in valleys
“Due to the strong wind, the snow is transported a lot, snowdrift will form. The avalanche danger will increase significantly as a result. But an activity in the mountains at the weekend is not a good idea anyway,” says Resch.
But the valleys in the south of the country will also turn white across the board. In Windischgarsten, Resch expects around 40 centimeters of fresh snow by Sunday, in Bad Goisern it’s 30. The Mühlviertel will also lose the rest of its green meadows: these will be covered by up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow by Sunday.
After that, there will probably only be news in western Austria: High pressure weather with lots of sunshine could prevail there from Monday. “In Upper Austria, the forecast is still quite uncertain. At the moment, however, it looks like the wintry weather will continue to accompany us in the coming week,” says the meteorologist.
