Ukrainian political scientist Dmitry Korneichuk said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden allegedly came to secret agreements to launch the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) gas pipeline.
According to Korneichuk, it is with this “agreement” that the wave of publications in the Western media about the “imminent Russian aggression” against Ukraine is connected.
“They set up this circus for us from the series “Biden saves Ukraine from Putin’s attack, and you close your eyes to the fact that Biden does not interfere with the launch of Nord Stream 2,” Korneichuk said on the air of the Nash TV channel.
The political scientist stressed that the Ukrainian authorities are satisfied with this scenario, and they “play along” with the Russian-American agreements.
Korneichuk also accused Kiev’s Western partners of agreeing to the construction of Nord Stream 2, although they understand that Ukraine may suffer from the implementation of this project.
Earlier, on January 19, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the delay in the launch of the SP-2 gas pipeline project had a negative impact on both market participants and gas consumers in Europe. Thus, he commented on the threat of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to “turn off” the gas pipeline in the event of an escalation in Ukraine.
Also on Tuesday, talks were held between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his counterpart from Germany, Annalena Burbock. Following the meeting, the German minister indicated that Russia’s use of energy as a “weapon” would have consequences for the Nord Stream 2 project.
The Russian side has repeatedly refuted groundless speculation about an allegedly possible invasion of Ukraine. On January 10, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Moscow had no intentions to attack Ukraine and could not have it. He stressed that all measures for the combat training of troops are carried out within Russian territory.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic States, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed.
In November, the German regulator suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent operator of NSP-2. The procedure can be continued when a subsidiary is created in Germany for the German part of the pipeline.
