Reportedly, David Fincher is preparing to develop an English version of the successful Korean series The squid game for Netflix.
It was rumored that the director of Fight Club and Gone Girl has been involved in the dystopian show for several months, and now Deadline has reported that he is “likely” to dedicate his time to the English-language incarnation of the South Korean series in 2025.
This would be the first adaptation of the original series of Hwang Dong-hyukwhich debuted on the streaming service in 2021. The show instantly became a pop culture juggernaut, spawning a second season and a reality competition in 2023.
Deadline also reports that Fincher’s version of the show will be written by Dennis Kellyknown for Utopia and The Third Dayas well as the film version of Matilda The Musical.
Fincher’s participation in The Squid Game has strange echoes of The Gamethe director’s third feature film. That 1997 film, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Pennwas also about an ordinary businessman who becomes involved in a mysterious and deadly game beyond his control.
