The abbot’s verdict on the spirituality of the Covid deniers was harsh: “They have turned our faith into a religion dominated by a strict God who punishes. They teach that our church is being persecuted and thus create nothing other than Fanaticism.” These monks are not concerned with the Christian faith, but with gathering a following around them. They would divide church and society. The Abbot also referred to the phenomenon as “cancer” in the body of the Church.
With his interview, Abbot Bartholomaios confirmed the recent statements of another Athos monk. The public prosecutor’s office in Thessaloniki then promised investigations, as the information portal “OrthodoxTimes” reported on Tuesday.
The abbot of the Esfigmenou monastery publicly criticized what he called “intolerant fanatics” as early as November and called on the public prosecutor to intervene. According to the abbot, only 40 percent of all monks on Mount Athos were vaccinated in November.
