Because people are still missing, a further increase in the number of victims is to be expected, the emergency services announced on Friday. After extremely heavy rain, numerous places, especially in the east of Spain, were flooded; the Mediterranean region of Valencia was particularly badly affected.

In many places there is a lack of food, water and electricity. Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles wants to send more soldiers to the areas destroyed by the storms than the 1,700 already deployed. The number will be increased as long as it is necessary for rescue and reconstruction work, she said today on state broadcaster RTVE.

Valencia particularly hard hit

Communities and towns in the Mediterranean region of Valencia near the large city of the same name are particularly affected. Robles named the towns of Ribarroja, Paiporta and Algemesí, where the military has not yet been deployed and to which forces are now being sent. There will be no limits to resources. She did not give a specific number as to how many additional soldiers would be added tomorrow.

“The army will be in all the communities that have fallen victim to this situation,” Robles promised. The first communities like Catarroja south of Valencia, which are still not accessible by road, are now resorting to self-help in order to be able to provide the residents with the essentials.
