The explosion of the vehicle loaded with explosives occurred on Wednesday around midnight in the municipality of Saravena, in the department of Arauca, where guerrillas from the National Liberation Army (ELN) and of the dissidences of the FARC confront each other despite a strong military presence.
“The miserable terrorist attack with a car bomb in Saravena, Arauca, is an attack that all Colombians reject,” said the president of Colombia, Ivan Duke, on his Twitter account.
“Our Public Force will continue to strengthen territorial control in the area to corner these armed groups and guarantee the safety of the population,” added the president.
The Army assured in a statement that according to the first investigations the attack was committed by the FARC dissidents. The explosion caused the destruction of some buildings, including the headquarters of an organization that promotes the defense of human rights.

According to organizations such as Human Rights Watch (HRW), Arauca has become one of the most dangerous areas for social leaders, the target of attacks and threats by illegal armed groups in the midst of an internal conflict of almost six decades that has left 260,000 dead.
At the beginning of January, the clashes between the ELN and the FARC dissidents left around 30 people dead in several municipalities of the department of Arauca, according to local authorities, who assured that some victims belonged to the illegal armed groups in dispute.
The oil and livestock region was the scene in the past of a violent confrontation between the FARC and the ELN that left hundreds dead and displaced, and that concluded with an agreement between the two groups.
The Government of Colombia accuses the Venezuelan president, Nicholas Maduro, to protect the dissidents of and the ELN in its territory. Maduro insistently denies it.
Clashes between armed groups are causing the displacement of hundreds of people to Colombia from Venezuela in some areas of the 2,219-kilometer border, including the city of Puerto Carreño, the capital of the Vichada department.
