Lavrov proposed to create a memorial to the victims of Nazism in the USSR in Berlin

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at talks with German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock in Moscow, proposed creating a memorial in Berlin dedicated to all the victims of Nazism in the USSR. This was announced on January 20 by the official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova.

“… Sergey Lavrov suggested that the German side think about creating a memorial in Berlin dedicated to all civilian victims of Nazism in the USSR, regardless of their nationality,” she wrote on Telegram.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expects Germany to study this proposal. Zakharova also noted that the implementation of this idea “would make a significant contribution to the process of historical reconciliation.”

“We proceed from the fact that in modern Germany they are aware of the importance of preserving the culture of memory and critical reflection on the dark pages of their past, including the enduring historical responsibility for the atrocities of the Nazis, including on the territory of the former USSR,” the diplomat added.

Earlier that day, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Holocaust denial as a historic event.

According to the text of the document, the UN General Assembly rejects and unconditionally condemns any full or partial denial of the Holocaust, as well as any distortion of its history, and urges all UN member states to do the same.

On May 20, 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting of the Russian organizing committee “Victory”, said that the country is increasingly faced with attempts to slander history, to reconsider the role of the Red Army in the victory over fascism. These attempts, in his opinion, are being made by “all sorts of Russophobes.” Moscow cannot leave this without a reaction.

In June, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin would stop every attempt by Western countries to distort historical events.
