On the occasion of the commemoration of the victims of the November pogroms, the Vienna-born historian, author and filmmaker Helene Maimann will be a guest at the Arbeitswelt Museum on Thursday, November 7th, at 7 p.m. with her book “The Shining Star”. In it she tells the story of her parents, who looked for a different world after the Second World War. The commemoration ceremony on the occasion of the November pogroms of 1938 will take place at the Steyr Jewish Cemetery at 5 p.m. Helene Maimann is also the speaker here.
In her book, the historian and author talks about parental influences, confrontation, hope and failure. Her parents had an extreme life behind them: as fighters in the International Brigades in Spain, in the Resistance, in the Allied armies, as survivors in concentration camps or in Siberia. Comrades-in-arms were on Schindler’s list. They were Jewish or communist or both.
After this war the world will be a different place. That was clear when her parents started anew in Vienna. As part of the memorial event, Maimann will speak about the children of the survivors who went from the margins of society to its midst. Many today belong to the cultural and political avant-garde. Helene Maimann is one of them. She talks about hopes and failure and about friends Elizabeth T. Spira, Robert Schindel, André Glucksmann and many others.
