Budget at the center of exploratory talks between ÖVP and SPÖ

The ÖVP exploratory team: State Secretary Claudia Plakolm, General Secretary Christian Stocker, club chairman August Wöginger, Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer, EU and Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler and Economic Association boss Harald Mahrer
Club chairman Philip Kucher (SPÖ), ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian (SPÖ), the third National Council President Doris Bures (SPÖ), party chairman Andreas Babler (SPÖ), Federal Managing Director Sandra Breiteneder and women’s leader Eva Maria Holzleitner (SPÖ)

This time, the ÖVP and SPÖ delegations appeared to the media on the way to the meeting location, the Palais Epstein next to Parliament. However, there were no major substantive statements. It had already been made clear beforehand that after the start, which was largely devoted to the atmosphere, it was now time to move on to the content.

The work is not exactly made easier by the budget development. The Fiscal Council is currently forecasting a deficit of 3.9 percent of GDP. SPÖ leader Andreas Babler said on Tuesday that his party had been warning about this development for a long time.

This difficult budget situation will be one of the most important topics in the explorations today and tomorrow. The areas of health and care as well as security and migration have also been addressed. Measures against inflation and climate protection should also be addressed.
