Plea for climate and soil protection

Plea for climate and soil protection

“The automobile human being – wrong paths in a society and possible ways out” is the name of the new film by city planner Reinhard Seiß. The stirring documentary will be shown on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Wels arthouse cinema. Afterwards, visitors can discuss with the filmmaker.

In his passionate plea, Seiß calls for a fundamental change in transport as a prerequisite for serious climate protection, a move away from further, unnecessary soil sealing and waste of resources. Among other things, he denounces the establishment of large specialist stores and shopping centers on the outskirts of the city. “Wels made these mistakes again late, when we already knew from other cities what shopping agglomerations outside the city mean for the city center,” says Reinhard Seiß in an interview with OÖNachrichten. In Wels-Nord and Wels-West there is overwhelming competition for the city center, a lot of money has been spent on its revitalization in recent years. There is no equal opportunity. “People park for free outside. Disposable architecture was built on cheap commercial land, while in the city center parking space is scarce and has to be paid for and merchants have to pay expensive city center rents in listed buildings.”

He speaks of the “fast food of shopping” on the periphery. Only a few profiteer: the landowners, real estate developers and trading groups. An undesirable development that must finally be stopped. “Because local supplies belong where people live, and not where people have to drive a few kilometers to get there.”
