The UN General Assembly at a meeting on Thursday, January 20, adopted a resolution condemning the denial of the Holocaust as a historical event.
The resolution was co-sponsored by more than 60 countries, including Israel, the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Ukraine. The resolution was adopted without a vote.
According to the text of the document, the UN General Assembly rejects and unconditionally condemns any full or partial denial of the Holocaust, as well as any distortion of its history, and urges all UN member states to do the same.
At the same time, the General Assembly expresses gratitude to the countries that contribute to the preservation of the places used as Nazi death camps. The authors of the resolution call on states to develop educational programs so that the lessons of the Holocaust are preserved in the memory of future generations.
In December, it became known that the United States and Ukraine had voted against a Russian resolution to combat the glorification of Nazism. 49 countries abstained.
The document recommends that countries take certain measures, “including in the field of legislation and education, in accordance with their international obligations in the field of human rights, in order to prevent the revision of the results of the Second World War and the denial of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed During the Second World War”.
In addition, in the document, Russia calls on countries to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination by the means necessary for this, including by law.
On January 20, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a briefing pointed out that the West was ignoring rampant neo-Nazi sentiment in Ukraine. She noted that even international organizations do not show interest in this problem.
So, at the end of last year, the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada decided to celebrate at the state level the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA, the organization was recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The UPA was established in October 1942, the organization fought against the troops of the Soviet Union and provided support to Nazi Germany. In 2015, in Ukraine, members of the UPA received the status of “fighters for the country’s independence.” On October 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that in Ukraine, the entire spectrum of manifestations at the state level of the line on the glorification of Nazism was recorded, the country’s authorities are engaged in rewriting history.
