Anyone looking for winter needs patience. Or have to look in the rearview mirror: There was more than two meters of snow on the mountains of the Salzkammergut in mid-September. Hardly anything remains, the golden autumn is currently living up to its name – and will continue to do so until after the weekend. At least where the view of the cloudless sky doesn’t get stuck in the thick fog.
However, tourism in the Salzkammergut is already meticulously preparing for the cold season – and this year is not (only) following the classic paths. The ski areas Dachstein-West, Dachstein-Krippenstein, Feuerkogel and the resurgent Kasberg remain winter draws, but outside of them things get exotic in places.
Surfing and ice bathing
Already this week, on Saturday, November 9th, begins Mondsee the winter tourist program. The ice rink there is to be positioned as a “perfect alternative” to the “rarely frozen lakes in the Salzkammergut”. Until March 2, 2025, visitors can not only ice skate, but also play ice hockey and swing the sticks. Thanks to ice skate rental, nothing stands in the way of spontaneous excursions.
The “Shadow Shepherd Path” is completely new Postalm celebrated together with the Wolfgangsee Advent. From December 1st of this year, he will be taking visitors through the (hopefully) snowy landscape of the Postalm from Wednesday to Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) until Christmas. At least one hut is open for refreshments along the way. There are also torches or toboggans for those who like it faster. The path will be open continuously from December 26th to February 2nd.
As reported, tourism has discovered ice bathing on the banks of Lake Attersee. At the beginning of the year, an ice bathing weekend took place at the Hotel Attersee in Seewalchen using the methods of the Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hof. The rush and interest were so great that the Attersee-Attergau tourism association is once again offering a place to cool off this winter. At the Hotel Haberl in Attersee the mind and body should find peace during the hectic pre-Christmas period from December 13th to 15th.
The combination that will be available from December 14th will be mentally more difficult Ebensee is offered, because from then on you can switch directly from the Feuerkogel slopes to the surfboard. With the new “Snow and Surf” ticket every Friday from 4 p.m. you have the opportunity to surf under the lights on Europe’s largest river wave after a day of skiing. A wave of combined enthusiasm is then possible until March 30, 2025.
Sporty and traditional
The winter hikes on Bad Ischl’s local mountain are not new, but are still popular.
There, tourers and snowshoe hikers can stop off in the rustic alpine hut or in the modern mountain inn. And if you don’t need any training for the stopover, you can also use the Katrin cable car from December 21st to March 2nd, 2025.
