Australia will be the first in the world to start exporting liquefied hydrogen; as part of a pilot project, the first deliveries will be made to Japan. This was announced on Friday, January 21, by the head of the Australian government, Scott Morrison.
“Hydrogen produced in Australia will be sent to Japan as part of a pilot project to create a new hydrogen energy supply chain. The project is key to Australia and its hydrogen industry,” Morrison’s statement was published on the government’s website.
It is noted that the government of the country allocated 150 million Australian dollars ($108.2 million) to finance the first stage of the Australian hydrogen trading program.
In addition, a special cargo ship capable of carrying supercooled liquid hydrogen has been built, which will arrive at the port of Melbourne on Friday for loading, after which the first batch of fuel will be sent to Japan.
It is reported that on board the ship will be 1250 cubic meters. m of liquid hydrogen, it will be transported at a temperature of -253 degrees.
The head of government also said that the project for the supply of liquefied hydrogen is able to “make Australia a leader in the industry, which will produce up to 225 thousand pure hydrogen per year.”
Expanding clean hydrogen production will allow Australia to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Morrison said.
At the end of November last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Russian government and Gazprom to work out the possibility of exporting hydrogen to Europe in the form of a methane-hydrogen mixture through existing pipes. The corresponding report, according to the instruction, should be ready by June 1, 2022.
In August, Governor of the Kamchatka Territory Vladimir Solodov reported that the region was considering the possibility of exporting green energy in the form of hydrogen to Korea and Japan. According to him, first you need to solve the problem of production and delivery.
