“Every hate message is additional motivation for me”

For the sheer joy of taking creative photos and to be able to stay in touch with a friend after moving, Lisa-Marie Schiffner uploaded her first photo to Instagram at the age of 12. What started as a creative hobby quickly developed into a passion – today it is her profession. The native of Upper Austria is considered one of the first Austrian influencers who significantly shaped “content creation” as a career.

However, this path was not easy. In the podcast interview, Schiffner speaks openly about the challenges of being an influencer and the bullying she experienced due to her online activities. Isolation at school and teasing accompanied her for years. “After many tears and conversations with my parents, I said to myself: Every hate message is an additional motivation for me to live my dream and keep going,” says the now 23-year-old. That paid off.

The importance of fitness and well-being is all the more important to her when talking to other young people. “Ultimately, it’s important to treat yourself well – both mentally and physically,” she says. This applies, for example, to the topics of mindfulness in nutrition and mental health – especially in the fast-moving online world.

Because there is enormous pressure on influencers to post regularly, preferably daily. This also involves a wide range of skills, from video editing to marketing. “Our profession is often underestimated and laughed at in the public eye. Yes, compared to a doctor, our job is certainly not as relevant to society. But that’s not the point. It’s simply a job,” emphasizes Schiffner, who now also runs her own IT start-up. “My job creates jobs. Social media is now an industry that generates added value. That should be clear to everyone by now.”

Even though she is only 23, she sees herself as an “old hand” in her job. “I’ve been doing this for more than ten years now. I’m happy when I can support young talent today,” says the Styrian by choice. But the job of an “influencer” is no walk in the park. “Success doesn’t come overnight. Sustainability and perseverance play an enormous role,” is Schiffner’s tip for young people.
