Italian police have uncovered a pan-European network of counterfeiters of contemporary works of art located between Spain, France and Belgium. Works by Gustav Klimt were also forged. After producing counterfeit works of art, agreements were made with several Italian auction houses to sell them, the investigation reveals.
An investigation is being carried out against 38 people who are accused of trafficking in stolen goods, forgery and marketing of works of art. Over 2,100 counterfeit works of art were confiscated. If they had ended up on the market, it would have brought the gang income of over 200 million euros. The investigation was initiated by the public prosecutor’s office in the Tuscan city of Pisa and then continued by the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Department in Rome.
