The UN Security Council announced the monitoring of the situation with the negotiations between Moscow and Washington

The UN Security Council is monitoring the situation with the course of negotiations between Russia and the United States. This was stated on Friday, January 21, by the chairman of the Security Council, Norway’s permanent representative to the world organization Mona Juul.

Talks between US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took place in Geneva earlier on Friday. They lasted an hour and a half. The Russian minister noted that the United States agreed to provide the Russian Federation with written responses to proposals for security guarantees next week. Blinken, in turn, called the talks with his Russian counterpart frank and substantive.

“We need to find out what happened. We are monitoring the situation,” Juul said in an interview with TASS.

Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Russia would make “serious political decisions” if the US and NATO response on security assurances was disappointing. According to him, the role of diplomacy in any case remains central.

Negotiations on security guarantees were held in three stages in January. On January 10, a meeting of the Russian and US delegations took place in Geneva. On January 12, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held in Brussels, and on January 13, consultations ended at the Vienna site of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Ryabkov pointed out that the US and NATO were not ready to meet Russian proposals for security guarantees. According to him, NATO’s position on the issue of non-expansion of the alliance is “impenetrable”, which is alarming. The Deputy Minister also stressed that the issue of non-expansion of NATO is a key issue for the national security of the Russian Federation.
