Merkel refused to go to dinner with the future head of her party

Former German chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected the offer of the future head of her party, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) Friedrich Merz to go with him to dinner. On Friday, January 21, reports Spiegel.

According to the publication, Merz sent out an invitation to all former chairmen of the CDU. In addition to Merkel, former Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer also refused to join the company at dinner.

Spiegel notes that the dinner was supposed to be the starting point for establishing communication between Merz and Merkel, as they had previously had an uneasy relationship. The former chancellor of Germany referred to the fact that the schedule does not allow her to come to dinner. And the ex-head of the Ministry of Defense had personal reasons for this, the newspaper reports.

On January 19, UN Secretary General António Guterres offered Merkel an advisory position at the UN. However, the ex-Chancellor of Germany refused the offer.

Angela Merkel served as Acting Chancellor of Germany for 17 years. She became the first woman to head a federal government. In September 2021, Merkel gave way to Social Democrat leader Olaf Scholz.

On December 2, in the courtyard of the German Ministry of Defense in Berlin, a solemn farewell to Merkel from the post of chancellor took place. The Bundeswehr Orchestra performed several compositions, including three of Merkel’s choice, among which was Nina Hagen’s punk hit Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen (German: “You forgot the color film”).
