According to the CABA statistics institute, the cost of the basic basket grew 2.2% in October.

A “typical” Buenos Aires family needed more than a million pesos to avoid falling into poverty during October. It happened since the cost of Total Basic Basket (CBT)which determines the poverty line, rose 2.2% in the month in question.

This was reported this Tuesday by the Institute of Statistics and Censuses of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). According to the agency’s survey, a household made up of a woman and a 35-year-old man, economically active, owners of the home and with two sons aged 9 and 6, had to obtain income from $1,015,902 to satisfy basic food and non-food needs.

In parallel, the Basic Food Basket (CBA)which measures the poverty line, rose just 0.9%. Therefore, the family mentioned above required $550,350 to avoid falling into poverty in the tenth month of the year.

The CBA comprises a set of foods that are part of the structure or consumption pattern of the city’s populationin quantities that satisfy the minimum energy requirements of a “equivalent adult” (male 30 to 59 years old, moderately active). As the institute explains in its reports, the basket meets “to the greatest extent possible the nutrient intake recommendations, at the lowest possible cost.”

To calculate the non-food component of CBT, It is taken as a composite element (not undivided) and then disaggregated into different subgroups of expenses. Afterwards, their respective consumer units are defined and a minimum requirement for the reference population is assigned.

The CABA statistics institute also prepares a “Total Basket”which to the CBT includes expenses for the acquisition or renewal of durable goods for home equipment and for recreation, as well as those other expenses that have seasonal characteristics (clothing) or contingent, such as health products and services.
