15 prisoners died and 14 were injured after an armed attack at the Litoral Penitentiary of Ecuador, the most violent prison in the country that is under the control of the Armed Forces, reported the National Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI).

Local media stated that the attack was the product of a dispute between groups to gain control of the largest prison in Ecuador.


Through a statement, the state agency referred to the act of violence and reported: “This morning, in a specific pavilion of the Litoral Penitentiary, Serious incidents were recorded between Persons Deprived of Liberty (PPL)resulting in a preliminary balance of 15 dead and 14 injured“.
As they stated, as soon as the attack occurred, the Security Block acted “immediately” to take control of the place and activated a large-scale operation. In turn, Investigations began to clarify the behind-the-scenes of the attack.
“Currently, the prison is under absolute control. A significant contingent of military and police personnel have been deployed to ensure security and prevent new incidents.“, remarked SNAI.
Furthermore, he assured that after the attack, no prisoner managed to leave prison.

Prison violence continues in Ecuador
In the Litoral Penitentiary, several confrontations took place between organized crime groups related to drug trafficking that maintain a dispute for control of the prisons.
According to the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights of Ecuador (CDH), between 2018 and 2022, 591 were found inside the country’s prisons. Of that total, the 76% were people killed in massacres inside prisons.
