“We have a different wind”: That’s the slogan of the Altschwendtner Windradlplattler. And the young group recently did justice to this in a special way. The folk dance group led by chairman Felix Lauber traveled to Morocco at the end of October and represented Austria at the “Marrakech Folklore Days” – an international meeting of folk dance groups from all over the world and continents.
How did the Altschwendtner Plattlers get this honor? “By a very lucky coincidence,” says chairman Lauber. “The festival contacted us directly via our Instagram channel in February and invited us to the festival. We still don’t know exactly why they came to us.”
However, it became clear relatively quickly that the Plattlers from the small Schärdingen community definitely did not want to miss this opportunity. After all, the “Marrakech Folklore Days” is one of the largest folk dance festivals in the world.
Thousands of enthusiastic spectators
19 “Plattlers” and eight companions set off on a journey to the North African country, where they enjoyed the special “festival flair” for five days and made numerous international contacts. The highlights were of course the two performances in the Moroccan metropolis. The Altschwendtner Plattlers were allowed to bring their program to the stage for 20 minutes each. “The Folklore Days are not a competition. It’s simply about presenting yourself, your country and the associated folk dance,” says Lauber. The venues for this are impressive: the international folk dance groups performed on the Djemaa el-Fna, the central market square in Marrakesh, and in the modern, futuristic M-Avenue district. According to Lauber, several thousand spectators attended the performances.
