Flames on the Eisenaualm: Buchberghütte at the foot of the Schafberg burned down

For the volunteer fire brigades, operations at 1,015 meters above sea level are particularly challenging.
There is hardly anything left of the Buchberghütte.

It was only on November 5th that the operators of the Buchberghütte thanked them for “a lovely summer with numerous visits” and wished the many hikers who stopped by the Eisenaualm every day a quiet winter time. Just a week after the end of the season, everything is different: there is hardly anything left of the popular excursion destination at 1,015 meters above sea level, which is located on the hiking trail towards the Schafberg summit.

The Unterach, Steinbach, St. Gilgen and St. Lorenz fire departments have been trying to put out the flames since Thursday morning. The location of the hut is challenging for the emergency services, and nothing is yet known about the cause of the fire. Because there is no water on the mountain, a shuttle service had to be set up. The journey time for the fire brigade is up to 30 minutes. “The fire-fighting work is now in full swing, and two helicopters are also in use,” says the St. Gilgen Volunteer Fire Department. The city of Salzburg also requested a professional fire department’s large tank fire engine to support the fire-fighting work.
