An unidentified man opened fire at the five-star Xcaret hotel in the state of Quintana Roo in southern Mexico. As a result, two Canadian tourists were killed, another was injured. This was reported on Saturday, January 22, by the newspaper El Pais, citing the authorities.
According to police chief Lucio Hernandez Gomez, the shooting began after a quarrel between hotel guests. First, the police reported one dead Canadian who was hospitalized with a gunshot wound. Then it became known that the second victim of the shooting also died.
El Pais reports that the perpetrator has fled into the jungle. The command of the coordination group launched an operational operation to capture him.
According to the authorities, both dead citizens of Canada had problems with the law and were involved, among other things, in the illegal circulation of weapons and drugs.
“The first person who died had a criminal past: drug trafficking, use of forged documents, among other things. The death of the second person who was injured is confirmed, he also had a criminal history, ”the prosecutor’s office of the state of Quintana Roo said in a statement.
Earlier, on November 4, a shootout of drug dealers took place on a beach located near the Mexican Cancun. After the shooting, unknown persons seized the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun hotel. Authorities in the state of Quintana Roo said there were no casualties among tourists at the popular beach. At the same time, the prosecutor’s office confirmed the death of two criminals during an armed showdown. Mexican TV channel ADN40 reported that one hiker suffered a “minor injury” following the incident.
In February, an armed attack in the Mexican state of Jalisco killed 11 people and injured two. The regional prosecutor’s office reported that a group of men were drinking beer near the house when they were attacked by unidentified men who drove up to the scene in a truck.
