“The birth was picture-perfect. Especially with giraffes, this always poses a major initial risk, as the animals give birth standing up and the young animal sees the light of day by falling from a height of two meters,” said zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck on Friday.
The first few days of the young animal are also very critical, so mother and calf are currently under special observation. A team of experts analyzes the animals’ behavior around the clock using cameras equipped with the giraffe house. “Our primary goal is to enable the animals to be raised naturally by their parents. We now have to keep our fingers crossed that the calf continues to develop well,” said Hering-Hagenbeck.
