The tragedy occurred after a series of technical malfunctions which as a consequence ended the lives of 44 people, whose memory is honored by his family year after year.
The remains of the submarine were located on November 17, 2018 on the seabed 800 meters deep in the ocean by the ship “Seabed Builder”from the American company Ocean Infinity.

The file for the disappearance of ARA San Juan heads to oral and public trial with only four accused for the alleged crimes of “aggravated negligent damage”for the death of the 44 crew members, and “breach of public official duties”.
The accused are the former Chief of Navy Operationsfrigate captain Hugo Miguel Correa, he Chief of Staff of the Submarine Force Commandcaptain of Héctor Aníbal Alonso Ship, the former head of Navy Training and Enlistment Command (COAA) Luis Enrique López Mazzeo and the ex commander of the submarine forceship captain Claudio Villamide.
For its part, the Federal Chamber of Comodoro Rivadavia urged that this be carried out first oral debateeven though it may not be the only one, nor may it be reduced to just these four defendants.
In fact, the chamber stated in a resolution: “would be violated if the start of a debate that has been in a position to be held for four years is hinderedin pursuit of a measure that has been described, by the Prosecutor’s Office itself, as dispensable to substantiate its claims, or that could be exhausted in the subsequent stage.”
Furthermore, in the same resolution he warned that Families have the right to obtain a court ruling in a “reasonable time”because fathers and mothers of crew members have died since the disappearance of the ship.

This memorial that remembers the 44 crew members of the submarine is located outdoorsand in addition to commemorative plaques in memory of the submariners, has the original propeller of the submarine, with which it was manufactured in Germany.
He Submarine Force Command Museum It is located on the North breakwater, adjacent to the Mar del Plata Naval Base. It was originally conceived as a historical room of the Submarine Schoolwhich housed the war flags of the first submarines ARA “Santa Fé” (S-1), ARA “Santiago del Estero” (S-2) and ARA “Salta” (S-3), photographic albums, heraldry and different objects of these units.
